In the May 2007’s issue of the Chicago-based, “DC Modern Luxury” magazine, on page 138, a photograph of a charcuterie board was mis-credited. Above is the image, and it was shot by yours truly. Sonoma is the owner of the image, but it was shot in 2006 by me. Check the website credit. I’m sure it was just a mistake or oversight. -kk

Saturday Night Live… Rock.

Filed under: Arts & Artists — kevinkoskiphoto @ 10:51 am

Four day work weeks got you down? Hoping for that 5pm “WORK WEEK OVER” bell to ring so you can Fred Flintstone it outta your K. Street offices? (Who am I kidding, most of my readership are ‘funemployed’!!!) Coldplay tickets at the big phone booth downtown too much for these (thank you for the nightly reminders Brian Williams) harsh economic times? Then why not rock out locally this weekend… ??? Since the Nats are out of town this weekend, why not venture to that other up and coming area of DC, “H. Street, NE“. Here’s my pick o’ the week. Rock And Roll Hotel, Saturday night – Go see a bunch of bands you probably haven’t heard of, but maybe you should – “Velvet”, “Wait Till Friday”, and a personal favorite of the District Creatives readership, Michael Jantz & The Davenports. Recently, Mike has released an EP called “Live at Jims”, and early acclaim has come in droves. Kevin Koski, of www.districtcreatives.com calls it, “…a summertime, back yard BBQ soundtrack if there ever was one…” …OK, so I’m lazy and I have no time to look for all of this acclaim I’m hailing, but I’m telling you, the new EP is a rock and roll romp and a great sound, and it all translates to the live show beautifully.
SO, let’s recap here. No Nats in town. Money is all spent on gas and food, (and according to Brian Williams, “SPAM” too) and you want a great live show? Rock And Roll Hotel, Saturday night. And let’s get one thing clear – This is not an advert for anyone. These are hard working artists working in the community, doing what they love – SUPPORT LOCAL ART! : ) -kk

National Police Week, Candlelight Vigil Images

Filed under: Arts & Artists — kevinkoskiphoto @ 12:27 pm

No, this doesn’t fit under the heading of “district creatives” or “creative profiles of artists”… But they are profiles of courageous men and women who put themselves and their lives on the line every day and night. Click the image above, and take a look at the gallery of images from last Tuesday’s candlelight vigil, (held at the National Law Enforcement Memorial), in which over 350 names of fallen officers were engraved in the memorial. -kk

R.I.P., Robert Rauschenberg

Filed under: Arts & Artists — kevinkoskiphoto @ 12:00 pm

“Anything you do will be an abuse of somebody else’s aesthetics. I think you’re born an artist or not. I couldn’t have learned it. And I hope I never do because knowing more only encourages your limitations.”

Wow. This is turning out to be an “even-shitter-than-usual” week.

Goodbye to one of the most important artists/voices of the 20Th century. Often imitated, but NEVER duplicated, Robert Rauschenberg was, to me, the quintessential artist. He crossed mediums, but was never satisfied with anything, and lived his life doing what he loved, and his work will continue to inspire, as it has for years to come.

How Friggin’ Awesome Is…

Brandon Bloch? Pretty friggin’ awesome, apparently. Check out his website by clicking on the name, but also, check out his great profile of Billy Colbert and his DC art experiences. Great work, and two, distinctly wonderful district creatives.

Remember when you first learned about YouTube? I do. Someone put me on to it a few years back, and I, for one, (with a crummy old computer) was blown away at the fact that you could watch short silly videos, on your laptop, anywhere in the world. I thought that it was the technology that would change the way people viewed art, and culture, and would truly be a new medium in the art field.

Then came the “Leave Britney Alone!” guy.

Then came Saddam’s execution.

Then came “Don’t taze me, bro!”.

Then came the 9/11 conspiracy videos.

Then came… you get the point.

Well, the other day, I stumbled upon a similar type of technology, but was amazed to find that people were actually using the medium of video for (gasp!) art. And oh by the way… It’s HD?!! Check out – www.vimeo.com – and see what the difference is between people with tools, and people who know how to use those same tools with a vision. Also, below is a beautiful film by Phillip Bloom. It’s a good 6 minutes long, but it’s a marvelous, and beautiful piece of filmmaking.

Someone Say… Artomatic?!

Filed under: Arts & Artists — kevinkoskiphoto @ 12:44 pm

It’s the mosssssst wonderful tiiiiiiimmmmme…of the year….. : ) It is that time of year again. The weather is nice again, (right before it gets uncomfortably hot), your taxes are finally done, (and you’re waiting for that sweeeeeeet $600 GWB hooked you up with), and weekends like this last one are having us all, on a Monday morning, look 5 days ahead to check out what’s going on this coming weekend.  Well, instead of a weekend, how about a full 28 days of art filled activity? Artomatic is back, and starting May 9 thru June 15 you will have the opportunity to view a thousand different artists, across multiples of media, right downtown. Artomatic is THE most prominent displays of art in the District all year, and if you have but one creative bone in your body, it’s your duty to check it out.  Check back here this week for profiles of some of the creatives involved in this wonderful tour-de-force of art.

Tim Tate – Mixed Media Artist / International Badass Artist

Filed under: Arts & Artists — kevinkoskiphoto @ 2:00 pm

Alright, so last summer I had the opportunity to meet/photograph a man who’s assisted, (whether he knew it or not) and inspired the whole DistrictCreatives movement for me; Downtown DC resident and internationally acclaimed artist Tim Tate. And so what did I do? I took the photographs, (for another client) but unfortunately, they never ended up publishing them, on account of deadlines/pages/etc/yaddayadda/whatever. Great assignment though, and it was all good. Then, a few days later, I get a call to go on assignment overseas, and within a week, I’m swamped with editing 2400 images for the next few weeks. And so these shots, and this major man and story in the DC art scene went by the wayside. Yea, so… My bad. So, it’s been stewing in the crockpot that is my brain, and you know what? Ehhh, it’s done. A little seasoning, and here we go. : )

Tim Tate exemplifies the DC artist at his/her best. He’s someone who’s in touch with the entire art community, and while he’s exhibited here in the area and is widely respected for such, he’s also displayed around the country, and throughout the world. He’s best known for his work with glass and mixed media, but whatever the palette he’s working with is, he makes it uniquely his own, and is instantly recognized for his personal and intimate views and work with his pieces. He’s a professional artist, but he’s also a teacher of the craft, using his skills to educate everywhere from the Smithsonian to schools in Istanbul and beyond. When we spoke, (from what I recall, ((and I apologize Tim, if I’m not recalling correctly))) Tate believes in the same type of thought process that most of us artists do here in the District, in that this city is a great, amazing, international city that’s on the cusp of having it’s time in the sun, and soon will being recognized for all the fantastic artists that reside here, and the work that they produce.

I humbly apologize for the delay on this, and hope that if you haven’t heard of Tim Tate, check out the website, or see his work at the next available gallery show. People like Tim help me keep the dream alive, as an artist. And People like him, make me think that DC, as a worldly recognized “art” city and the people inside it, is that much closer. -kk
