Masked Marty Is Mighty Tasty, 2008, acrylic on canvas, 60 x 60
From DFA Press Release – This show features 12 paintings from 2005 – 2008, including six from Leah Tinari’s recent masquerade series. This is Leah’s first solo show at DFA since contributing works to the group show, Hit Me With Music at District Fine Arts in 2007 and again at DFA’s recreation of the exhibit at Bloomingdale’s, Chevy Chase in 2008.
The content and formal elements in Tinari’s paintings combine to offer an always personal, occasionally caricature-like narrative, addressing and encompassing both the awkwardness and the complexity of the human condition. Although the work is a documentation of her personal experiences, she hopes that the images will evoke familiar feelings or create a sense of voyeurism – as if the viewer is peeking into a still from someone else’s life that is utterly foreign to them. Her paintings are snippets of time that capture moments and function as a visual diary to create her social realism, a documentation of 30-something contemporary lifestyle and behavior.
Leah’s work is a celebration of life. She strives to make paintings of her life, the people and the world around her. Tinari wants to create a wonderful and vital dialog between people and art, and between art and life.
Leah, who lives and works in New York City graduated from R.I.S.D. in 1998 and has been showing in New York City and beyond ever since. She is a featured artist of the West Collection at SEI Investments located in Oaks, PA and her works have been in publications such as; The Downtowner, Elle, The Georgetowner, Lucky, NY Arts, The New Yorker, New York Times Magazine, Spin, The Village Voice, and The Washington Post.

Whoo! Thursday before the Friday before the week of Christmas! Time to check out. : ) Happy Christmas to all. Enjoy one of the most underrated xmas songs of all time, and see you in 2009! -kk
So, it’s like what, a week before Christmas? Something like that? Don’t know what to get that person-who-has-everything on you list? How about this little number…
This 50 page retrospective, printed on hi-gloss paper and bound in special edition dust jacket, is a one of a kind gift that… alright, you know what? Honestly, this is a look back for me, at the 5 years (come February) that I’ve lived and worked in Washington DC, and some of the great and amazing people that I’ve grown to admire and respect. These images in this book, (it really is 50 pages) are shots that I’ve always liked, for one reason or another, and have decided to publish. From presidents and kings, to clients, models and friends, these images are the ones that I feel best represent me and my work. So, for a limited time, and a run of 20 books, (really, on high-gloss paper) this 50 page book can be yours. No profit to me, but if you buy one, I’ll sign and number it for you. : )
So… either order one online, or contact me at kevin.koski@gmail.com
Times are tough, boys and girls. Apparently, someone, somewhere said we’re in a “recession”?? Not sure what all that mess is about… but what I am sure of, is IT’S THE HOLIDAY SEASON! Huzzah, huzzah! And what better way to show the ones you love, that you do in fact remember their names and what not, than art! Yessir&ma’am, here’s what I’m proposing – If you’re a local DC artist, looking to hawk some goods this season, maybe make some extra Christmas stash-cash, hit me with an email at kevin.koski@gmail.com. I’llbe more than happy to do a quick profile, and put your stuff up here on blast, and in return, I’ll ask of nothing more than to have you tell a friend about District Creatives, and the movement we’re running here. Sound good? So email me with whatever you have, gimme a quick background, and boom, you’ll be solving both your holiday gift-giving situation, and you’ll be helping our community become more and more prevalent in the national and international art scene.
Also, this coming Friday is the opening of the Downtown Holiday market, so you know… if your not into this whole “internetz” thingie, for buying/selling your goods, definitely check out the market, located F Street – NW between Seventh and Ninth Streets. Go! -kk
Glad you asked... District Creatives is a website, with the intention of showcasing Washington DC's sometimes underappreciated, but tremendously talented young new creative artist pool. Whether it be through photography, graphic design, graphic arts, music or whatever fuels you creatively, this city is a blank canvas and I would like to show that there is more to Washington DC than lobbyists and politics. District Creatives has NO link or affiliation to any major metropolitan publication or periodical, and is owned and operated by a small group of hungry and talented individuals who reside and contribute from the city itself. To be considered for showcase on District Creatives, please send links to galleries or images of recent works to kevin.koski@gmail.com.
