Hey sportsfan – Two days of rain got’cha down? The most depressing man in news media, telling you that the sky is falling every day? Worried that if you live in Virginia, omitting a canoe, there’s no way you’re getting into the District for inauguration day? Want some more fun news? Adele, the girl who charmed us all with the mildly depressing, but hauntingly beautiful “Chasing Pavements“, is coming back to DC for a return show. The show is sold out, but on Saturday the 17th, the 20 year-old neo-soul songstress will once again grace the 9:30 Club stage. So check your craigslistings because there’s got to be someone who’s double-booked with an inaguration party or something, and is looking to dump their tickets. And if you can go see her perform live, you’ll be much more impressed with this young woman as she channels voices much older than her own on stage. And cheer up! It’s already Wednesday! It’s almost Thursday… which is almost Friday! So hit the volume on that song above, and rise above the rainclouds. -kk
Since the golden age of alternative music, (or to me, the last time music was listenable – the 90s) Tricky has been churning out gems for albums, and unlike his contemporaries, his music transcends the years, and is still very much relevant today. With the release of his new album, “Knowle West Boy“, Tricky is on a small US club tour… and where else do you go, when you’re in DC? That’s right – Tricky will be at the 9:30 Club, this coming {HURRICANE HANNAH OH NO!!!} Saturday. It’s a late show, but given that this guy is off the radar for years at a time, one could argue that they could open the doors after 2am, give a 15 minute show, and it would still be worth it. -kk
{from the album release website}
Knowle West Boy is the album that sums up everything that Tricky has accomplished since his 1995 Maxinquaye debut. From the sardonic bar-room blues of Puppy Toy to the haunting quasi-classicism of Joseph; from the twisted Specials-worshipping punk of Council Estate to the bereft torchery of Past Mistake; from the Roxy Music’s The Bogus Man-at-the-dancehall art-stomp of Bacative to the poignant autobiographical tale of teen pregnancy that is School Gates, Knowle West Boy sees our misunderstood hero reaching into the post-punk, Two-Tone, reggae, hip hop and pure pop he grew up adoring, twisting it all into surreal Tricky shapes using his astonishingly accomplished band and a host of great undiscovered singers, and ending up with the most varied and accessible set of his career.
To conclude, Tricky was the subject of one of my favorite videos of all time, “For Real”, directed by Stephanie Sednaoui. Check it below. …Yea, I’m weird. I know.
Big ups to a truly creative voice in the industry. -kk
Man, I don’t know what it is about this band… There’s something intimate, yet ornate about the sound. Nearly every song that’s been put out has it’s own agenda, and it’s own creative place. And nearly every track from all 3 of the albums can be used as fodder for your next favorite mix tape CD. : )
This week… ok tomorrow, one of the most original sounding bands of the past 10 years, Rogue Wave, comes to the 9:30 Club. The new album is called “Asleep at Heavens Gate”, and it’s just as outstanding as the previous two releases by Zach and the band. Go see them.
I’ve got to be honest. My writing skills are lacking this morning. I’m mailing this one in, but this band is great, and even if you don’t get a chance to see them live, czech out some of the songs on the myspaces. : ) -kk
Former local, current Brooklyn-ite, always amazing musician -Citizen Cope is back in town this month for a nite at the 9:30 Club. If you get a chance, check out this exclusive engagement right after Christmas, on the 27th. Tell him I said what’s up too. Oh, and also if you get a chance, ask if he needs a tour photographer… -kk

Glad you asked... District Creatives is a website, with the intention of showcasing Washington DC's sometimes underappreciated, but tremendously talented young new creative artist pool. Whether it be through photography, graphic design, graphic arts, music or whatever fuels you creatively, this city is a blank canvas and I would like to show that there is more to Washington DC than lobbyists and politics. District Creatives has NO link or affiliation to any major metropolitan publication or periodical, and is owned and operated by a small group of hungry and talented individuals who reside and contribute from the city itself. To be considered for showcase on District Creatives, please send links to galleries or images of recent works to kevin.koski@gmail.com.
