A Transition… Sorta.

Sooooooooooooooo, a long-delayed apology to the readers of this blogsite. As the kids say, I’ve been “slackin’ on my pimpin’” lately, and to those of you who rely on this site for your news and info for everything creative in DC… c’mon, we all know that there’s better stuff out there. : ) No, I’ve been neglecting this project, and moving forward, I will do my best to make more of an effort to post more often. That being said, peep the new and improved district creatives in the next few weeks. We got new content, new contributors, new layouts, new reviews, new profiles, and new stuff. Because as everyone I’ve spoke to over this long winter has been saying, Washington DC is on the cusp of change and newfound art notoriety, and I want to be able to tell everyone that we were here first. So, enjoy the last regular week of DC normality before the Cherry Blossoms turn this town into a circus, (although Barnum & Baileys will be doing that too, at Verizon this weekend) and have a great Monday. Check back in later this week for new stuff! -kk

Laura Tsaggaris

There’s always going to be something about the appreciation I have for a local artists making good. Not just “good”, like good – “they made some money and gave back to the community” good, and not just “good” like – “hit it big with some sort of niche-poppy song that gets a little bit of airplay” good. I’m talking like, “good work, good skills, good music, good appreciation, good all around.” After careful investigation, I believe Laura Tsaggaris is doing good. Rather, is doing great.

Armed with a guitar, an amazingly produced and performed album, a voice & songwriting skills that reach beyond her contemporaries, and a desire to follow a dream, Washington DC’s own, (by way of transplant, similar to the 78 billion others from Pittsburgh, living here now…) Laura Tsaggaris is gearing up to hit that foreign stretch of land also known as “the west coast” in support of her 2005 album “Proof”, and in preparation for the anticipated release of new material for an album in 2008. (That, by the way, was the longest run-on sentence in the history of the English language. Thanks for noticing.) She’s received praise for the initial release of the album, and has been touring the area locally for some time now, and is making a push in 2008, to bring her sound to a wider audience. (Which in my completely unprofessional opinion sounds like a wonderful assortment of Aimee Mann/Nick Drake/Regina Spektor/Counting Crows/and Ani Difranco all hanging out at a party. But then again, I’m just a photographer. What do I know…) Anywhoo, Laura’s got a few more gigs around here for the next few weeks, including Wonderland Ballroom, and Bistro Europa, in Alexandria, but you better catch her now, as she’ll be gone west, south, north, and all points in between, for the better part of the next few months. And when she comes back all famous and stuff, so she totally won’t remember all of us, maybe. If you run into her before though, say hi, and support local artists by buying her albums on on iTUNES! PROOF (2005), EP (2001), at CD baby, and check out the myspace page for touring info and all things relative.

Oh, and for what it’s worth, it’s pronounced – (suh-GAIR-iss) : ) -kk

So many Holiday parties, so few tuxedo t-shirts to choose from and wear… So tragic.

The thing about those mass produced tees that you can get at an Urban Outfitters, with those catchy saying and retro characters, is that not only can anyone buy one, but almost everyone can understand the concept behind a gigantic “FRANKIE SAYS RELAX” shirt. I present to you, Archipun.

Started 4 years ago by college roomates, Kevin Johnson, (not this Kevin Johnson) and Joel Chappo, Archipun was born. They began printing architecture-related sayings on t-shirts basically for beer money, selling them to kids in their architecture studio. Since graduating from Ball State in Muncie Indiana, Chappo moved to LA and Johnson moved to DC. According to Johnson, “We have done a few runs of shirts for friends and coworkers, but never really ‘released’ them. We’ve done pre-orders of shirts in the winter and spring the last couple years of the most popular sayings. We have about 20 different ones but only print 6 to 8 of them.” So we know what that means… Limited. Edition. Tees. …Awesome.

And truthfully, I apologize to Kevin Johnson for not getting this post up earlier. He’s another one of the District’s truly creative types, and he had mentioned something about “pre-orders having to be in by Dec 3.”… However, should you want one of these great, unique humor tees, you can still contact kevin.johnson@smithgroup.com. -kk
